Cutting through Mozart’s symphonies may seem a daunting task. His first had already been premiered by the time he was nine, and in just over two decades he produced more symphonies than many composers write in a lifetime. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart raised the symphony to heights that in many respects remain unsurpassed. Of his 50-odd symphonies, produced between 1764 and 1788, the earliest ones are conventional but precocious, reflecting influences of Johann Christian Bach, Giovanni Battista Sammartini, and Joseph Haydn. According to most recent investigations, Mozart wrote not just the 41 symphonies reported in traditional editions, but up to 68 complete works of this type.

In his book “Mozart: A Life”, Peter Gay says, “Mozart’s symphonies and piano concertos, piano and violin sonatas, chamber music and divertimentos, operas, concert arias, and masses reached levels that only a few composers have ever hoped to approach” (2-3).
